Blue House

The Blue House is a new residence sited alongside dense bushland in the Blue Mountains.
We see this forested and steep site as an opportunity rather than a limitation – the surrounding context has shaped our response and inspired our architectural approach.

The brief calls for a private retreat with a strong connection to nature. Importance is placed on the ability to host children and grandchildren for weekends away. As such, the design gives breathing space between the 3 bedrooms, whilst creating a central indoor-outdoor living space to come together as a family. Views across the escarpment provide a dramatic backdrop for the sheltered interior spaces. The siting and floorplan design of the house has ensured that there is minimal impact to the vegetation and landscape of the site.

Typically for this region, the house needed to comply with the maximum level of bushfire classification – Flame Zone.
Consequently, the residence presents a tough but warm exterior. Brick and concrete form the protective skin, but care has been taken to sculpt the exterior form to soften the exterior whilst providing functional and beautiful interior spaces.

We look forward to documenting this project in 2022.
