Vindin House at the Abbotsleigh campus in Wahroonga is a former boarding house that has been extensively upgraded and converted to a purpose designed Gallery and art teaching facility. Opened in 2013, Vinden House now houses the Grace Cossington Smith Gallery, named for the artist of the same name who is regarded as one of Australia’s foremost modernist artists.
This project involved the removal of numerous accretions and layers of insensitive building work that had taken place over the past 90 years, to bring the building back to its original configuration and its former glory.
A sculptural external fire stair and lift have been added at the rear of the house to bring the building in line with current fire and egress regulations, but this is the only obvious intervention. All contemporary servicing has been seamlessly integrated and the interiors returned to their former grandeur.
